Reading can be a way of entertainment or just a learning experience, but some pieces of literature can be down right uninteresting. This draws the question of what makes a good novel good and what aspects make certain ones so unbearable. Since people are so different it is hard to generalize about their common likes and dislikes, but this is what I find makes a good book:
A significant aspect of a good book is originality. With the combination of thousands of novels written to this day and the extensive television/movie industry; many story lines have been told. With this comes the more difficult stride for writers to create original novels. When a novel emphasizes love in a way that is not unique to theme, plot, and original characterization it becomes tedious to a reader and leaves them in a bore. On the other side, an original story can convey a new perception to a reader on any given theme and this is essential to a good novel.
One aspect of a bad book that makes it so painful to read is excessive repetition. It is one thing for a novel to stress a certain point in order to pursuay the reader to an idea or motif, but when i writer gets carried away in conveying this idea and repeats it several times it can get a bit tedious. At times the theme of a novel may be unclear and take some repetition, but when this is done in an uncreative way that is merely repeating the same words again and again; it is a bad read.
Last and most significant; a reader is left satisfied when the novel concludes in a fascinating resolution. The resolution is what ties the occurrences throughout the novel into one meaningful mesh. When all of the novels important happenings resolute to support a greater theme; a reader is left with a stronger impact that makes them think about the novel long after they flip the back cover.
It is true that it is difficult to please all types of readers with one novel, but many readers look for the same things. I have found that most readers respect a book with originality, lack of repetition, and a fascinating resolution. These aspects fuel my taste for literature as a reader.
